Why was 18 chosen to be the age we become adults?
18 Years Old Adults
I do not think most of them should be considered adults. I do not think most people are ready to be adult at eighteen developmentally speaking. Whilst I am a victim of child abuse and have autism spectrum disorder which causes delay in your development, I am now twenty-one and definitely unready to be an adult and do not live like one. I most certainly was not an adult at eighteen, either, obviously, since I am not not one now either.
Your brain and body are still developing generally, until your mid twenties or so.
You will always hear how someone married at 18, or about how a kid emancipated at 16 and was able to handle adult obligation. That is because not all people develop at the same rate. There can be some 16–18 year olds very much ready for adulthood, but speaking for the vast majority, I do not think at 18, it is accurate to say most are ready for adult responsibility.
The prefrontal cortex is crucial within one’s ability to responsibly make decisions, better control emotions, and anticipate consequential action. In vast majority of people, it does not complete growth to a mature level until the mid twenties; 25–27 or so.
Then, there are some cases of female breasts not reaching full maturity until 23 years old, there are many cases as in my own self where wisdom teeth are not yet grown in, until mid twentie (mine are not yet in), someone can still have a younger sounding voice whilst…
